GoNorth Japan is the brainchild of Quinlan Faris. It was started in 2010 as a website to share information about many of the hidden gems in Northern Japan. Initially, it featured articles and photos from local festivals, historical sites, and scenic areas. Then in April of 2019, after encouragement from Chris Broad, a popular Youtuber, the GoNorth Japan Youtube Channel was born. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the videos have been primarily focused on outdoor locations and activities, but gradually are increasing their scope to include more cultural and historical locations and events.
In addition to making videos about northern Japan (and occasionally other areas), Quinlan provides interpretation, guiding services, consulting to local travel agencies, and runs an Airbnb out of his home (since 2015).
