Join me on a 2-day overnight adventure up the Nanataki Trail of Mt. Iwate on August 24th and 25th!
I’m guiding a small group of up to 9 members (7 slots open at this time) from 8am on Thursday, August 24th. I’ll pick everyone up at Morioka Station at 8am and we’ll stop at a convenience store for food and such before starting at the Nanataki Trailhead in Hachimantai. This is one of the longer trails up Mt. Iwate, and will be about 10km to the summit and then 8th Station lodge where we’ll spend the night with an elevation gain of around 1500 meters. We’ll pass multiple waterfalls, an active volcanic area with sulfur vents and some fairly steep slopes before climbing up to a beautiful ridge walk along Onigajo, the Demon’s Castle.
Since we will be spending the night at the lodge, we’ll have plenty of time and can stop as much as we like for photos and snacks. We’ll likely reach the lodge where we’ll spend the night by 3 or 4pm at the latest. There is spring water available at the lodge, as well as bathrooms. We can also get hot water for coffee or instant ramen there. Blanket rental is 500 yen, but if you have a pad and sleeping bag, definitely bring it. I’ll provide a list of what to bring (both what is absolutely necessary and what is just recommended) by email when you inquire.
Assuming that the weather cooperates, we should be able to enjoy both the sunset and sunrise from the edge of the caldera on the summit.
This 2-day trip will be 15,000 yen per person. Feel free to as any questions you may have!
These two videos show the first day of the hike (but not the 2nd).
