Akita Komagatake is one of the most stunningly beautiful, and underrated stratovolcanoes in northern Japan. It’s accessible all year round via various routes, and is ideal for backountry skiing, snowshoeing, and enjoying during the green season with a wide array of some of the most beautiful alpine flowers and plant life. The raw physical beauty of the volcanic landscape also defies description. This short 3-minute video featuring views from above showcases that beauty.

I like to say that Akita Komagatake has one of the best “cost performance” ratios of the mountains around here. During the green season, without expending that much energy or being a very experienced hiker, you can access these views. There are a number of trails going in a variety of routes though, so it can be confusing at first. I offer tours to this area from Morioka, and will be scheduling more after tourism opens up again. Feel free to consult me directly about a tour of this volcano area.
